Global Motion at Broad Stage

Edition: 30 April 2009

Showcasing choreography from virtually every corner of the planet, Folklórico de SMC will present "Global Motion," a program of world dance.

The event is secheduled for May 2 and 3 in the Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

On the program will be African, Aztec, ballet, ballroom, belly dance, Chinese, flamenco, Guatemalan, lyrical jazz, Mexican, salsa, tap and Yiddish choreographic styles.

Folklórico de SMC is under the direction of Raquel Ramirez, Sri Susilowati and Judith Douglas.

"Popular TV programs such as 'Dancing with the Stars' provide beautiful inspiration for form and beauty within a certain genre," Ramirez and Susilowati said in a written program note. "What we try to achieve is an ability to learn both about our own cultures (dancing with ourselves) and the cultures of others (dancing with each other)."

They said that the "global motion" theme seeks to demonstrate the need for global citizenship - a major SMC initiative - and "our interdependence with other peoples."

Faculty choreographers are Laila Abdullah, Argelia Andrade, Crystal Calvillo, Laura Canellias, Jennifer Jesswein, Sonny Perry and Charlotte Richards.

Guest choreographers are Christian Estrada, Karen Goodman, Jade Karim, Herman Moore and James Muñoz.

Student choreographers are Alondra Ramirez, Sarah Reich and Nasario Vazquez.

Folklórico de SMC has toured extensively throughout Mexico and California for more than 16 years - at schools, festivals, and special events.

Tickets, which sell out quickly, are $15 general admission and $12 for SMC students with ID and senior citizens. Parking is free.

For tickets, go to www.smc.edu/eventsinfo or call (310) 434-3000.
