An Open Letter to the President

Dear Mr. President,

No one should expect or want a nanny state – a state where government is constantly looking through its spectacles over the shoulders of its citizens or businesses. Conversely, blatant and egregious pilferage of public funds cannot be tolerated; in any society, at any time, especially not now.

I could literally breathe easier after November 4th of last year. I will never understand why the intelligentsia of America failed to see the parallels between the Albert Camus play "Caligula" and the eight years of Bush Absurdity. I am proud that I supported and campaigned for you. I even wrote a couple of articles. Who knows, someone might have even read them.

Your campaign was based upon the promise of change. You constantly reminded us of the many failed policies of George W. Bush: the most colossal being economic. You promised us that you would oversee how taxpayer's money was spent. You promised us that you would do your best to prevent the free for all purloynen; the waste and misuse of public funds.

Mr. President, ABC News reported yesterday that Bank of America, the second largest bank in the United States, spent almost ten million dollars of our hard earned tax dollars to get invited to a super bowl party. TEN MILLION DOLLARS Mr. President! That is 286 annual salaries of $35,000 for those lucky enough to have a job. It is 8334 house payments of $1200 for those who are lucky enough to still own a home.

According to ABC, Bank of America defends its expenditures – they have no remorse; no guilt; and no apologies in the works. If Bank of America had limited themselves to presenting an 850,000 square foot display used to attract new business one could deem this an investment even if it failed. No one, not even Bank of America, can be sure if an investment will pay off. But alas, Bank of America did not. The fattest of the fat cats had one hell of a time on our dime. They reportedly attended the most lavish of the super bowl parties replete with limousines, caviar and the best food and entertainment our tax dollars could buy.

Mr. President - this is tantamount to sticking their tongue out at you because they are so used to the misguided belief that no one is accountable for any wrongdoing in America because it has been so true for eight long years. I called Scott Silvestri, Bank of America's Corporate & Financial News Media Relations Contact, to ask him how many foreclosure notices Bank of America has filed since Super Bowl Sunday. He didn't return my call. He might not have the right person to ask; I don't know. I may never know because … he didn't return my call.

If Bank of America would at least disclose how much they spent, at least we could give them credit for that; but they have refused to even tell us how much they spent. Why is that? Is it because their hands have been caught in the proverbial tax payer cookie jar, and like a little boy who knocks over a lamp and breaks it, tells his mother “Uhhh I didn't do it.” Being the eternal optimist, I am thankful for one thing: at least we now have partial accounting of where some of the $750 BIILLION taxpayer dollars went.

Mr. President, you promised you would put an end to this kind of fraud on the taxpayer. Mr. President, I voted for you because you said eight years of mismanagement and failed policies was enough. Mr. President, if the ABC report is correct, and if Bank of America gets away with this one, nothing has changed.

Kindest regards Mr. President,

Dan Laget
