Edition: 21 April 2009

The Spring 2009 issue of Santa Monica Review, Santa Monica College's national literary arts journal, has been released and will be available at the SMC booth at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books April 25 and 26. A limited number of free copies of the publication will be distributed at the festival.

In addition, Review editor Andrew Tonkovich and two contributors to the current issue - Michael Jaime-Beccera and Emily Quinlan - will give a reading at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 15 at the University of California, Irvine Bookstore, located in the UCI Student Center at the corner of West Peltason Drive and Pereira Drive.

Published twice yearly, the Review showcases the literary voices of established authors and emerging writers. Founded by SMC English instructor Jim Krusoe (Blood Lake, Iceland, Girl Factory, Erased), the Review has presented readers experimental, thoughtful, and funny works of fiction and nonfiction for 20 years and has achieved a reputation as one of the West Coast's leading journals.

The literary journal has included works by well-known authors such as Gary Amdahl, Alan Cheuse, Molly Giles, James Houston, Michelle Latiolais, Gary Soto and Jervey Tervalon.

The Spring 2009 issue includes work by novelist Louis B. Jones (California's Over) and acclaimed East Los Angeles short story writer Michael Jaime-Becerra (Every Night is Ladies' Night). There is also a long meditation by screenwriter Ellie Herman and stories from repeat contributors Alisa Slaughter, Dave Peters and poet/Young Adult novelist Michael Cadnum (The King's Arrow) as well as a story about the Rose Parade by first-time-in-print writer, Sean Howell.

Tonkovich said there is a preponderance of Californians represented in the issue: "This volume just happens to deliver on our promise to feature regional writers, part of the magazine's historical mission. Of course, contributors also happen to be some of the very best fiction and nonfiction creative writers anywhere."

Tonkovich hosts the weekly literary arts program "Bibliocracy" on KPFK 90.7 FM, Mondays at noon. His fiction and essays have appeared in Green Mountains Review, OC Family, Orange Coast and the Los Angeles Times.

Cover art for the Spring 2009 edition is by artist Nomi Silverman from her series "The Shepard Cycle," which deals with the murder of Matthew Shepard.

The Santa Monica Review is available for $7 an issue or $12 a year at www.smc.edu/sm_review as well as at the SMC Bookstore, Beyond Baroque and Small World Books in Venice, and other local and national chain booksellers. The Review is distributed by Ingram and Armadillo.

Copies are also available by mail and by subscription through Santa Monica Review, Santa Monica College, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405.
