Human Spaceflight, The Moon & Telescope Buying

By: Bruce Smith
Edition: 27 September 2009

The Santa Monica College John Drescher Planetarium will present four specialfeature shows Friday evenings from Oct. 2 through 30.

The feature shows are:

* "IMPACT! Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/LCROSS Update" (Oct. 2 & 9), which examines the mission's stunning images that show there is, indeed, water on the moon.

* "NASA's Human Spaceflight Future" (Oct. 16), which takes a look at whether NASA plans to send people to the moon. With NASA's post-shuttle era plans facing technical and budget trouble - and a new administrator, Charlie Bolden, at the helm - this show will analyze the work of the Augustine Committee, which will likely make drastic changes to NASA's human spaceflight plans.

* "Special Observing Event: Jupiter & the Moon" (Oct. 23), which allows audience members to look at the great gas giant and the crescent moon through an array of telescopes. The show starts in the Planetarium with a short primer on what to look for in the eyepiece, and then moves outside. If clouds intervene, attendees will stay inside and enjoy high-resolution images of Jupiter and the moon.

* "Telescope Buyer Survival Guide" (Oct. 30), which provides concrete examples and recommendations for the first-time telescope shopper.

The feature shows are at 8 p.m., and are preceded by "The Night Sky Show" at 7 p.m., which re-creates the night sky and provides the latest information on space exploration.
The John Drescher Planetarium, which features the Digistar projection system, is located on the second floor of Drescher Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd.

Tickets are $5 each or $9 for the "double bill," with discounts for children and senior citizens. For information and tickets , call (310) 434-3000 or go to www.smc.edu/eventsinfo or www.smc.edu/planetarium.
