With an overarching theme of "50s glam," students in the renowned Santa Monica College Fashion Program will showcase their cutting-edge designs in the annual fashion show, "LA Mode 2009," at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 7 in the Theatre Arts Main Stage, 1900 Pico Blvd.
"This is going to be a fabulous show with nearly 200 garments, the largest number we've ever had," said Fereshteh Mobasheri, director of the college's fashion and merchandising program. "The judges have been blown away and have said that some of the pieces are ready to be placed in haute couture collections."
Riffing off the theme "Glamorous Night at the Coconut Grove," the designers have found inspiration in 1950s high style, but with a contemporary and fresh twist.
Mobasheri said prizes will be awarded in five categories - Day Wear, Casual Wear, Club Wear and Evening/Fantasy Wear. A $250 prize will be given to the "Best in Show" designer.
"We are dedicating this year's fashion show to the memory of Martin Wicksman, owner of a very successful pattern-making business, who has been such a strong supporter over the years of our program - as an advisor, mentor and instructor," Mobasheri said.
SMC's fashion design and merchandising program is a rapidly growing program that has sent students to work in throughout the U.S. and the world.
Tickets are $10 and can be obtained by calling (310) 434-3005.
