Asian Pacific Islander Month Celebration

By: Bruce Smith
Edition: 30 April 2009

Hiroshima - the Asian jazz group that seeks to use the power of music to bridge cultural divides - is the featured performer at Santa Monica College's 10th Annual Asian/Pacific Islander Month Celebration Friday, May 1.

The special event will be held at 7:30 p.m. at The Broad Stage at SMC's Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street, Santa Monica. Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for students and may be purchased at www.smc.edu/eventsinfo (under "Special Events") or by calling (310) 434-3000.

Since Hiroshima's inception in 1980, the group has borrowed from numerous cultures - Asian, Latin American, African American and more - and merged these influences into a unique and innovative whole.

The result is a brand of music that speaks to nearly every aspect of contemporary culture.
Hiroshima has recorded several albums and has toured throughout the world.

The event is sponsored by the SMC Associates, a community-based organization that funds special events and speakers.
