Santa Monica College's Emeritus College Art Gallery is pleased to present "Field of Vision" - the 2009 Student Juried Exhibition that will be seen in two sections - from June 4 to July 3 and from July 16 to Aug. 14.

The opening reception for Exhibition I will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4 in the gallery, located on the first floor of Emeritus College, 1227 Second St. in downtown Santa Monica. Parking is available next door in Santa Monica Public Parking Structure No. 2. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Both exhibits will feature two-dimensional works - oil, watercolor, photography, charcoal, collage and mixed media - of 50 Emeritus College student artists. Emeritus College art instructor Jerrold Burchman juried the two exhibits.

"The name of the exhibition comes from a quote by the cultural theorist Paul Virilio, who said, 'The field of vision has always seemed to me comparable to the ground of an archaeological excavation,'" said Lynn LaBate, curator of the shows. "Artists excavate shards of illusion, reality, myths, dreams and pattern to make visible the images that help decipher or enhance our existence."
