As part of Santa Monica College's focus on water as a theme for its Global Citizenship initiative, the college will present a screening and panel discussion of the classic film "Chinatown" Wednesday, Nov. 4. The free event will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Humanities & Social Science Lecture Hall 165 on the main campus, 1900 Pico Blvd. The 1975 Oscar-winning film - directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway - focuses on a private detective who uncovers a vast conspiracy centering on water management, state and municipal corruption, land and real estate, and at least one murder. On the panel will be SMC film studies professor Josh Kanin, English professor Lantz Simpson, earth science professor Vicki Drake, and history professor Suzanne Borghei. SMC's water theme for 2009-10 comes in the third year of SMC's Global Citizenship initiative, a pioneering crusade that seeks to foster in students an understanding of international, intercultural and ecological issues, as well as an understanding of economic factors and human rights and environmental issues.
