The Santa Monica College Music Department (and Emeritus College) will present an eclectic mix of concerts and a music master class in March. The lineup is: * Friday, March 5 at 7 & 9 p.m.: Spring Jazz Concerts presents Kenny Sara Quartet. This group plays the authentic sounds of New Orleans, blending jazz, blues soul, rock 'n' roll and New Orleans boogie. The Edye Second Space at the SMC Performing Arts Center, Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. (Tickets are $10) * Tuesday, March 16 at 11:15 a.m.: Gale Oliver - Voice Master Class. Oliver has performed extensively in Europe and North America, singing operatic roles that include Mimi in La Boheme and Nedda in Pagliacci. The Edye Second Space at the SMC Performing Arts Center, Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. (Free) * Sunday, March 21 at 3 p.m.: Emeritus Concert Band. Under the baton of John Lanni, this band from SMC's acclaimed Emeritus College plays concert favorites. The Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th St. (Free) * Friday, March 26 at 7 & 9 p.m.: Spring Jazz Concerts presents Larry Karush Quintet. Karush, an improvising pianist/composer, has his roots in jazz, 20th-century music, African-based percussion and the music of North India. The Edye Second Space at the SMC Performing Arts Center, Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. (Tickets are $10) * Sunday, March 28 at 4 p.m.: SMC Symphony Orchestra. Romantic music concert features the "Allegro Affettuoso" of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor - performed by pianist Rhoda Tuit, chair of the SMC Music Department - and the blockbuster Symphony No. 1 by Gustav Mahler. In a musical love letter to American history, soprano Karen Benjamin, baritone Casey Zeman, pianist Yulia Kozlova and narrator Alan Chapman explore the richness of American folk songs.
